CPM Investigating Data Breach at MoneyGram Affecting Millions of Customers

Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy is investigating a massive data breach disclosed by MoneyGram on October 7, 2024. MoneyGram admits that its systems were compromised from September 22-24. The breach includes full names, physical addresses, dates of birth, Social Security Numbers, government-issued identification documents (such as driver's licenses), other identification documents (such as utility bills), bank account numbers, MoneyGram Plus Rewards numbers, transaction information (such as dates and amounts of transactions), and criminal investigation information (such as fraud).
During the hack, MoneyGram suffered a disruption in service that prevented customers from being able to access their funds, transfer money and complete other transactions online. According to news reports, according to news reports (see links below), MoneyGram was initially breached through a social engineering attack on the company's internal help desk. This attack allowed the threat actors to access MoneyGram's network using an employee's credentials and target data in the company's Windows Active Directory. MoneyGram began notifying customers of the breach via a posting on its website, but it has yet to disclose the details customers need to protect themselves from identity theft and other harms that will result from the loss of this sensitive information.
Companies like MoneyGram must do more to protect consumers’ valuable information.
