CPM Investigating Kootenai Health Data Breach
CPM is Investigating a data breach at Kootenai Health that may have disclosed the personal and health information of nearly 500,000 persons. According to its website, “As a regional medical referral center, Kootenai Health (formerly Kootenai Medical Center) provides a comprehensive range of medical services to patients throughout the Inland Northwest.”
Kootenai Health has posted a “Notice of Data Security Incident” on its website.
Kootenai admits that on March 2, 2024, it became aware of unusual activity that “disrupted access to certain IT systems.” Its investigation revealed that as early as February 22, 2024, hackers had gained access to its systems. Yet Kootenai did nothing to warn patients until August 12, 2024, giving hackers nearly six months with patients’ information before the hack was disclosed. This delay is particularly concerning because of the information at issue, which Kootenai admits “may have included individual’s names along with dates of birth, social security numbers, driver’s license or government-issued identification numbers, medical record numbers, medical treatment and condition information, medical diagnoses, medication information, and health insurance information. The depth and detail of this information makes this a particularly dangerous data breach for those affected.
If you have received medical care from Kootenai Health, your information may have been compromised and you may be entitled to compensation.
