Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy is investigating a massive data breach disclosed by AT&T. According to the Associated Press, “data of nearly all customers of the telecommunications giant AT&T was downloaded to a third-party platform in a security breach[.]” According to the newspaper article, “[a]pproximately 109 million customer accounts were impacted….” The stolen data includes call details such as: numbers called or texted, location of callers and duration. While names were not included in the data set, AT&T has admitted that there are often ways of using publicly available online tools to find the name associated with a specific telephone number. Cyber experts have said that the stolen information can be used to trace the activities of AT&T customers and the persons that they have interacted with through their devices.

“While the information that was exposed doesn’t directly have sensitive information, it can be used to piece together events and who may be calling who. This could impact people’s private lives as private calls and connections could be exposed,” Thomas Richards, principal consultant at Synopsys Software Integrity Group, said in an emailed statement. “The business phone numbers will be easy to identify and private numbers can be matched to names with public record searches.”

Companies like AT&T must do more to protect consumers’ valuable information. Consumers deserve to have their information protected and when mega corporations like AT&T fall short of their obligations, consumers are entitled to compensation. Loeser, is a former federal cyber-prosecutor specializing in hacking data breach cases. If you are an AT&T Cellular subscriber, please fill out the form below.
